Martin Vugrinec loving Jerez but less so the race

RBRC | Martin Vugrinec loving Jerez but less so the race

Hello everyone!

I came back from the first Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup weekend in Jerez. It was really great feeling to be a part of MotoGP. Until now I could only see it on the TV and now, I am one of the riders. The crowd, atmosphere and the organisation, everything was on a very high level.

It is unbelievable how people can build a whole little city for this event in just few days. It was very exciting to meet a well known faces of Andrea Dovizioso, Maverick Vinales, Marco Melandri and Marc Marquez with whom I took a photo and talked.

It was a big pleasure to watch all that glamour as a Rookies Cup rider. The Spanish fans are awesome because in Spain, Moto races are almost like national sport. I also gave my first official autograph. The men came with my picture and marker and asked me for signature.

But I as a rider didn’t have an ideal weekend in Jerez. In free practices I was still learning the bike and the track because, unfortunately, I didn’t ride the motorcycle since the preseason test because of the right hand injury. I sped up a bit in qualifying and achieved 16th grid position.

The Saturday was a really bad day for me. I woke up in a bad mood. My dad was trying to cheer me up, but it just wasn’t my day. Unfortunately I crashed on the 8th lap in a middle of the corner. It was not a big crash, no damage on the motorcycle or on me. I tried to start the bike to rejoin the race but I couldn’t and it made me a little depressed.

The next day I was feeling better, but part of me was always thinking about yesterday’s crash. I started well and I was keeping the rhythm without pushing over limit. I had a great fight with two other guys and had a plan for overtaking in the last lap, but one rider came into and almost crashed us destroying my plan, so I end up in 20th place.

In general I am very unhappy with the result, but this was my first weekend and as everyone is saying, I have to go step by step. I’m sure it will be better in Assen and I’ll give my 100 percent.

While I was away, I was featured in newspapers and bike magazines. I was also on a big video wall on the main square in capital city, Zagreb. A great number of people in my area cheer for me and I want to use this opportunity to thank them.

See you in Assen.
Best Regards.
